October 2009
An old friend of mine recently sent me something on the Internet that I would like to share with you. In order to accommodate this publication, I had to do some minor editing.
Now close your eyes and go back.........go way back......back before the Internet, personal computers, or microwaves. Go back before semi automatics and crack...back before cell phones, voice mail, e-mail CD’s and DVD’s. Now let us go way back....way.....way...........way back...to a time of hide and seek at dusk, take one giant step......May I?, Red Rover.....Red Rover, dodge ball, London Bridge, hopscotch, tag, you’re it, and jump rope.
Even go back to when parents stood on the front porch and yelled for you to come home (no pagers or cell phones). There were endless summer days and hot summer nights (NO AC) with the windows open and the sound of crickets. Those were the times when either Kool Aid or a swig from the water hose was the drink of summer. Days when a quarter seemed like a fair allowance and two quarters a miracle.
Yes, those were the days any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him, or use him to carry groceries....and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. If you were sent to the principal’s office, it meant nothing compared to the fate that awaited you at home.
I am talking about days when “Race Issues”, meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Catching fireflies could occupy an entire evening. Nobody was prettier than Mom and your scrapes and bruises were made better just by her kiss. Those were the days when abilities were discovered because of a “double dog dare”! Those of you that are my vintage remember these and many other similar events. We went from the radio to the stars. If you can remember most of these days, then you have lived in a simpler and more pleasant time! A time with bedtime prayers, Sunday morning Sunday school, and the privilege of prayer in school. No one found fault with the Bible, or God’s Ten Commandments.
We were truly a blessed generation with a love of God, family, church and country and that’s the way I see it.
